When you know your older child has homework, and she is playing a computer game, simply state the rule: “You know our rule is no computer games until after your homework is done.” And expect her to comply. Don’t give her the chance to lie about not having homework by asking her if she does. This is also known as not asking your child a question to which you already know the answer.

Stating your expectation gives the child no chance to lie. “Let me know when you have finished your job” (cleaning your room, setting the table, taking in the trash). It will get done, and she won’t need to lie.
